Don't Put Off That Skin Check. Medicare Covers More Than You Think

One of the most common questions we hear from new patients is a simple one.

"Do you take Medicare?"

The answer is yes. And if insurance uncertainty has been the reason you've been putting off a skin check, we'd like to clear that up for you right now.

We Accept Medicare

Naples Dermatology accepts Medicare and participates with most PPO plans. We recommend calling our office before your first visit so we can confirm your specific plan and make sure there are no surprises when you arrive.

Call us at (239) 261-3082, option 3 — or visit our insurance page for a full list of accepted plans.

What Medicare Generally Covers at a Dermatology Office

Medicare Part B typically covers dermatology services that are considered medically necessary. This includes evaluation of suspicious moles or skin changes, biopsies, treatment of skin cancer, and care for chronic skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.

Cosmetic procedures are generally not covered.

A Note on Skin Exams

Medicare does not cover routine annual skin exams as a standalone preventive benefit. However, if you come in with a specific concern — a new spot, a changing mole, or a patch that isn't healing — that visit is typically covered.

Our advice: write down any skin changes you've noticed before your appointment. It helps us, and it helps your coverage.

Do I Need a Referral?

If you have Original Medicare, you generally do not need a referral to see a dermatologist for medically necessary services. However, if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, your plan may require a referral from your primary care provider first.

Check your plan documents or call the number on the back of your insurance card to confirm before booking.

Tips for Your First Visit

A few things that help Medicare patients get the most out of their appointment:

  • Bring your Medicare card and any supplemental insurance cards

  • Write down any spots, moles, or skin concerns you want to address

  • Ask ahead of time if any planned procedures require prior authorization

  • Let the front desk know your plan type when you call so we can confirm coverage before you arrive

Not Sure What's Covered?

Insurance coverage varies by plan, and the best way to know exactly what applies to you is to call us directly. Our front desk team handles Medicare questions regularly and can walk you through what to expect before you book. We're here Monday through Friday. Call (239) 261-3082.
